Welcome to Critical Media Ecology 101 with Dr. bird! In this course, Dr. bird overviews their applied framework "critical media ecology," revealing how and why certain ways of thinking and being have become taken for granted "normal," in our day to day lives, workplaces, and governmental institutions, as well as why our current community members, organizations, and systems often do not solve fundamental problems within united states society, but, instead, reinforce them.

Are you sick and tired of how things are going? Have you ever quietly not agreed with the dominant way of doing things? Or, maybe, you've begun to garner the courage to actually disagree out-loud (kindly, or not) and you'd quickly found out that most of the folks around you Did Not Like you doing That -- AT ALL (LOL), but...deep down...you know you did the right thing.
Either way -- you've come to the right course, my friend! My name is Dr. bird and I, too, have commonly been cast as "the bad guy". But, like most any white person born and raised in the u.s., I Did Not start there. I began by being the bad guy -- For Real.
And -- truth be told -- it took me decades of nervous system dysregulated conformism, violences, heavy drinking, disassociation, distraction, and, ultimately, escapist overworked burnout to acknowledge the ways that I have taken part in normalized violences.

Required Texts (print, ebook, or audiobook):
I have been the bad guy & On being "the bad guy"

In this virtual (at your own pace / asynchronous) space, I'll tell you stories of ways that I was raised, what I learned, survived, and how I made choices to change, offering ways you might too. In other words, I'll teach you my "Dr. bird's eye view", how I changed over time, and walk you through reflection exercises to help you name your own experiences as forms of knowledge, contextualize them in up-to-date societal and historical findings about the u.s., as well as offer you encouragement to embrace being seen as "the bad guy" -- For Liberation.
Who this course is for:
-
u.s. folks who are open to uncomfortable self- and societal reflection(s).
-
Folks anywhere on the planet who realize that we all deserve/d better than This Sh*t.
-
Cool, smart, good humored folks ready to make liberatory ecological change(s).
